The first Texas State Homeschool Track & Field Championships was a great success last year with over 220 athletes participating, and we are looking forward to having even more this year. The meet will be April 24, 2010, at Belton High School (note the location change from last year).  Field Events will begin at 9:00, the 3200m at 10:30, and other running events at noon.  You do not have to be on a track team to participate. More details can be found at chargers.teamopolis.com.

We are adding a 10U this year for the 50m, 100m, 4X100m, long jump, and high jump.

We will again have the PeeWee 50m for all children in attendance under age 9, for which no registration is required.

Registration is a two-step process, and it is done differently depending on if you are entering with a team or as an unattached athlete.

1.  REGISTRATION FEE. ALL PARENTS go to the chargers.teamopolis.com website and register for the meet.  The registration link can be found in a box in the upper right corner of the page or in the left menu.  This is where you will pay their registration fee, pay for T-shirts if they want to pre-order them, and sign the liability waiver.  You may register all your children at once.

2.  EVENT ENTRY.

COACHES go to www.athletic.net to enter athletes in events.  You must have a free team account to do this.  You must also have your team designated as a “High School” team to be allowed to register for this meet.  When entering younger athletes, just leave the “Grade” and “Division” blank and enter the gender and birth date.

UNATTACHED ATHLETES will enter their events on www.athletic.net under the team name, “Texas Independent Homeschools.”  Instructions for how to do this are on the Chargers website when you register.

Registration is DUE midnight APRIL 19. There will be a $5 late fee for registrations received after this time. Final registration deadline is midnight, April 21.

Please be aware that you may make changes in your event entries up to midnight, APRIL 21.  NO changes or additions can be made after that time, no exceptions.

We look forward to seeing everyone there.

Raisin and Nut Cookies - Denise Graves

Raisin & Nut Cookies (from Set for Life recipe book)
(sometimes called breakfast cookies)

1 1/3 cups water                           5 cups whole wheat flour
2 cups raisins                               1 teaspoon baking powder
2/3 cup oil                                    1 teaspoon baking soda
1 cup brown sugar                         1 teaspoon salt
1 cups white sugar                        2 teaspoons cinnamon
3 eggs                                         1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
2 teaspoons vanilla                        1 cup nuts (optional)

Boil water and raisins for 5 minutes; let cool.
Cream oil, sugars, eggs and vanilla.
Blend in cooled raisin mixture.
Add dry ingredients and mix well.  Add nuts, if desired.
Drop dough from spoon onto nonstick baking sheet.
Bake in 400 degree oven for 10-12 minutes or just until set.
Yield:  60 cookies

Note:  I actually was missing one ingredient – the raisins.  So, I substituted a mixture of dried fruit that I did have – a few currants, dried apricots and a few dates.

Texian Christian Writers Conference

Lynn Dean, a former GWCHE member, passed this information along to us.  Lynn says, “I’ve known Jan for years, and she’s quite committed to recording God’s providence in Texas history. The conference speaker, Frank Ball, has a good reputation as a Christian writing coach in the Dallas area.”

Below is an invitation for everyone. Click here for a brochure to print.

Dear Texas Families, fellow writers, and school friends of Texas,

Ten years ago a group of like-minded Texas history buffs assembled at this quaint lost village of Tehuacana (www.thetrinityinstitute.org).  They met in buildings that housed first and second generation Texas collegians—children of those whom William B. Travis called Texas’ “intelligent population.”  A new generation of educators and enthusiasts known as the Texian Christian Writers [TCW] wobbled and wondered how to accomplish the task of teaching Christian history to this present generation. By sharpening our skills on PCs, LTs, fax machines, and emails, as well as iron sharpening iron with one another—we have learned to walk.

Even now, our website www.GodandTexas.org is getting a makeover and linking to our publishing arm, Johnson Printing Services, in Dallas so all you have to do is order directly. No more lost email orders in cyberspace! Even better is the upcoming tenth anniversary celebration of our humble beginnings and we have opened the invitation to anyone who wants to express their talent in the genre of history, romance, biography, poetry, politics, or art. Come with your ideas and let us point you to your dreams. Frank Ball is the man with a plan to help all of us achieve our goals.

Put our date on your must-do calendar (April 30-May 2, 2010) and email me for confirmation. Please feel free to duplicate and distribute this flyer to your church, school, club, and family or friendly contacts.  I will send a detailed agenda soon by snail mail. Come step back in time to Tehuacana—it is a retreat center like none other and very affordable.  Come away to rest, write, plan, and pray. For God and Texas, jan

Help Needed for Standardized Testing

It’s recruiting time!

GWCHE will be offering standardized testing…an excellent opportunity to get an objective evaluation of your child’s educational progress, to give your child practice on standardized testing, and to have an “official” record for your homeschool…

…BUT we need a crew of volunteers to get the job done!

I need around 7 more testers as well as volunteers for outside door monitor and study hall monitor (watching any children who are not testing while their parents help administer tests).

To be a tester, you need to have a Bachelor’s degree and be approved by BJU Press, which involves filling out an application, providing proof of your degree, and watching a 73 minute training DVD.   You must also be a GWCHE member.  I need lead testers and assistant testers (both need to be approved).

If you can serve as a monitor even for 1 day, that would be helpful.

Stanford Achievement Tests will be administered 9 am – 12 pm on May 3, 4, & 5, 2010 at Columbus Avenue Baptist Church in Waco.

Beth Saathoff has done a wonderful job in the past, and I am taking her spot as coordinator for the Stanford Achievement Tests.

Please contact me by February 1 if you are able to help administer the Stanford Tests.

Thanks,

Laura Sepanski  testing@gwche.org
