State-Funded ACT/SAT Exam

THSC was contacted by home school parents interested in the state-sponsored SAT/ACT testing that was taking place in public schools. THSC contacted TEA and negotiated a change in the testing eligibility, allowing for home school student participation.

Homeschooled students who are currently classified as high school juniors (grade 11) in the 2009-2010 school year will have the opportunity to select one college readiness assessment at state expense. At this time, students may take an administration of either the SAT or the ACT, and the state will pay the cost of their regular registration fees to the extent that funding is available. Registration for 11th grade college readiness exams is limited. Students may register for state-funded testing on a first-come, first-served basis. Students are encouraged to check the TEA webpage for information and to ascertain the availability of state-funded registrations before they register for the test.

Students who have already registered and paid for the May or June SAT or the April or June ACT may be eligible to be reimbursed by the applicable vendor (see below for test-specific reimbursement information).

There are different registration directions and test dates for each exam; please read the following very carefully.

SAT: There are two chances to take the SAT exam, but the deadlines are fast approaching. The first exam is May 1, and the registration deadline is April 15. The Second exam is June 5, and the registration deadline is April 29. To register for the exam, call the SAT Help Line at 866-756-7346. You will receive your voucher and your test site information when you call. For more information, visit the College Board website. For SAT registration reimbursement information, contact the College Board.

ACT: The ACT exam is June 12, and the registration deadline is May 7. In order to begin the registration process, you will need to request a paper voucher from THSC. To request your voucher and have it mailed to your residence, e-mail THSC and include the following information:

  • Parent’s (Guardian’s) Name
  • Student’s Name
  • Mailing Address
  • Phone Number
  • And the following statement: “I certify that my child is homeschooled and is currently classified as a junior (grade 11).”

ACT vouchers must be requested by Sunday, May 2. After you receive your paper voucher, you will need to register for the exam at the ACT website. Requesting and/or receiving a voucher from THSC does not guarantee testing availability.

In order to apply for ACT registration reimbursement, you will need to first request a voucher from THSC according to the instructions given above. Once you have received your voucher, visit the ACT website for more information.
