Colonial Dames Essay Contest winners!

Edith Gibney, from the Colonial Dames of America, came in the fall to our History Fair and offered our GWCHE students the opportunity to sign up for their national essay contest. Mrs. Gibney is such a blessing!

Seth Robinson, son of Craig and Dayna Robinson, entered and was one of the two Waco winners!  Seth will be attending a week-long seminar in Washington D.C. this June 18th through the 24th.

Congratulations Seth! Please keep Seth and his family in your thoughts and prayers as they travel to Washington D.C.

Mrs. Gibney asked us to pass along the topic information for next year as well as her contact information.  She says, “I hope to have more GWCHE students participate in our next year’s essay contest.”

The topic for next year is:  DISCUSS THE RELEVANCE TODAY OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN’S STATEMENT, “A HOUSE DIVIDED AGAINST ITSELF CANNOT STAND.”  The deadline for entries in January 15, 2012.

Press Release Announcing Seth’s Win!

History Fair Winner

ashleyk-history-fairLast year one of our own members entered our History Fair….and the rest is history.

She went on to place first in the Heart of Texas Regional History Fair at Baylor and then on to the Texas State History Fair.  At that level, she was surprised that  her paper made it to the top 10 entrants and was thrilled when she was notified that she placed second in her division.

The top two entrants per category are invited and encouraged to represent Texas at the National History Fair.  Ashley and her mother flew to the University of Maryland to join students from across the nation as they presented outstanding research papers, displays, historical dramas, documentaries and dramatic performances to judges.   It was an ashleyk-history-fair2education just looking and learning from all the projects!

In addition, while at the national competition the students can catch the metro into Washington DC to experience history itself.  Ashley got to enjoy the sights of the Capitol, National Monuments, Smithsonian museums, Arlington Cemetery and more!

Ashley competed in the category of Junior Historical Papers (6th-8th grades).   Ashley isn’t a history lover, but does have a passion for nursing.  Therashleyk-history-fair4efore, she found is was more interesting to do research for her subject of Mary Breckinridge:  An Individual Who Changed Rural Healthcare.

From a homeschool mother’s perspective, the process in researching, writing, editing, getting critiques was an invaluable experience in learning.  The winning was just an incredible blessing and surprise.

Way to go, Ashley!!!
