Baylor History Fair information

Hello and welcome to the Heart of Texas Regional History Fair 2010 – – I understand from Dr. Sloan that you just held your local history fair which he was invited to be a judge.  I have added your e-mail to my contact list for teachers for all future history fair information which comes out periodically throughout the year and all current history fair information that is sent between now and the fair itself on February 11 & 12.

If you have others who would also like to be included, please send their names and e-mail addresses.

You will find that much of this information is repeated in several different attachments to make it quicker and easier for you to find items you are looking for

This e-mail will have 8 different attachments – the total attachments are 9

2 attached “Letters” … one is for Jr./Sr. High teachers and one is specifically for 5th Grade Teachers

They are all important,

1 – but you will probably find the “on-line registration instructions 2010” – extremely helpful.  It is a step by step walk through of the entry registration system you will be completing for your school and your students.

I have included the registration URL on this information sheet.  If you copy and paste the URL noted for reaching registration, it does go direct to the first of several registration pages.

2 – CHANGE – Web Site projects submission:  required to have “IN” this HOTRHF Office four (4) printed copies of their Home Page, Process Paper, and Bibliography.  The printed copies are required in the 2010 National History Day Rules.   When you enter your student’s/projects into the on-line “registration program” – somewhere around step 4 or 5 there are instructions for Web site students to be sure to insert their unique weebly url.  If they don’t enter that url, the judges won’t be able to evaluate the entry.  It might also be useful to instruct teachers to double check this.  OR if teachers already have the url, they could insert it when filling out the basic student information so nobody is missed in the judging process.

3 – Texas History Day also offers Registration tips – see “on-line registration from THD 2010”

If you copy and paste the URL noted for reaching registration, it does go direct to the first of several registration pages.

4- STUDENT ENTRY FEE – IMPORTANT – $6.00 PER STUDENT not per project

TEACHERS & PRINCIPALS – be sure you are in agreement whether the school will pay for each student’s entry fee or if the student/parent will pay this fee BEFORE the students are registered to enter.  The HOTRHF is a non-profit organization and depends on this student fee to help defray history fair expenses.  This fee helps to cover only a small portion of the cost to offer this event to your school and students.  All fees are payable direct to “HOTRHF”.  On-line payment through the Registration program is not available. Office location for entry fee drop off is 1624 South 9th Street  OR mail to HOTRHF Baylor, One Bear Place 97203, Waco, Texas 76798

5 – If you need guidelines on how to bring the maximum number of your students to our history fair, please review “FAIR INFO – bring maximum nr of students to fair 2010”.  This also gives tips for deciding ties for

1st, 2nd, and 3rd.  We cannot accept ties for our 3-project per category limit.

We do limit each category to three (3) project entries each – per division – per school.  Some schools host multiple grades and may send Junior Division students as well as Senior Division students.  (3 projects in each group category and 3 projects in each individual category – exception WEB SITES is a combined judged category with individual and group projects competing against each other.  Limit Web Site entries to 3 projects per division regardless whether the three projects are individual or group.)

6 – There are two memos, one to Junior and Senior High Teachers and one specifically to 5th Grade Teachers. They give brief information bits from what parking to registration information.  Each bit is in itself important.  I hope you will take the time to scan each one. See attachment  “Entry Letter Dec-2009  for HOTRHF history fair 2010”

7 – “Entry drop off instructions 2010” gives you details for finding the HOTRHF office, etc.

8- “Fair T-SHIRT 2010 for e-mail use” is an order form, or you can just send me an e-mail to order t-shirts and send the money separately.  ALL ordered t-shirts MUST be paid in advance by January 6 or they will not be ordered.  See our HOTRHF web site to view    www.baylor.edu/historyfair

9 – “Tentative Schedule of Events” is exactly that – TENTATIVE. The official schedule will come out around mid January.  I will send the firm schedule as soon as possible.

On a last thought – for those students entering Historical Papers and Web Sites – Paper projects and Web Site Printed Materials are due in this office by or before January 6 – our deadline entry date. These two categories are pre-judged.  All other projects – Exhibits, Documentaries, and Performances – will be brought to and displayed at the HOTRHF 2010 on February 11 and 12 according to the schedule.

PLEASE COMPLETE YOUR REGISTRATION BEFORE YOUR HOLIDAY BREAK BEGINS if your school will not re-open before entry deadline date.  The HOTRHF deadline date cannot be extended – ORGANIZATION FOR THE FAIR IS VERY INVOLVED AND BEGINS IMMEDIATELY AFTER JANUARY 6.

Any changes after this deadline date creates a domino effect and causes hundreds of changes to be made for each change.

I suggest to all teachers who will be using our on-line registration system to go into it as soon as possible after it opens December 1.  Set up your school account and fill in what information you can – log out – and return when you have all of your student information.  This will cut the time it takes you to enter your students since your school account will be ready for use, and it will allow you to see exactly what information you have to collect from your students to get them registered. Many schools will not re-open before our deadline date of January 6 – the on-line registration system allows the teacher to enter all students at their own convenience from any computer.

You will need to enter the following information BEFORE the students can get in to finish up –

ALL PARTICIPATING student names

ALL Project names – these will be matched up with your student names according to instructions

It is requested that all your students enter their own accounts after the teacher has created them to complete required student information.

For Home Schools – you will each function as an individual school unless you are a member of a co-op that has decided to enter HOTRHF 2010 as a group.  If you enter as a co-op, please use your co-op’s name and not represent yourself as a stand-alone home school – thank you.  You will find an option under Texas schools to enter yourself as an “other” school.  Please use [ HOME SCHOOL – and your last name ] then proceed as the teacher.  If you need help with this, please call or e-mail.

The on-line registration system will open at 12:01 a.m. on December 1 and close at midnight January 6.  Entry registration can be done separately and in advance of entry fee payment.  Fee payment is made direct to this office – we do not have an option for on-line payment at regional level.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Hope your Thanksgiving holidays were fun – have a nice day.

History Fair Winner

ashleyk-history-fairLast year one of our own members entered our History Fair….and the rest is history.

She went on to place first in the Heart of Texas Regional History Fair at Baylor and then on to the Texas State History Fair.  At that level, she was surprised that  her paper made it to the top 10 entrants and was thrilled when she was notified that she placed second in her division.

The top two entrants per category are invited and encouraged to represent Texas at the National History Fair.  Ashley and her mother flew to the University of Maryland to join students from across the nation as they presented outstanding research papers, displays, historical dramas, documentaries and dramatic performances to judges.   It was an ashleyk-history-fair2education just looking and learning from all the projects!

In addition, while at the national competition the students can catch the metro into Washington DC to experience history itself.  Ashley got to enjoy the sights of the Capitol, National Monuments, Smithsonian museums, Arlington Cemetery and more!

Ashley competed in the category of Junior Historical Papers (6th-8th grades).   Ashley isn’t a history lover, but does have a passion for nursing.  Therashleyk-history-fair4efore, she found is was more interesting to do research for her subject of Mary Breckinridge:  An Individual Who Changed Rural Healthcare.

From a homeschool mother’s perspective, the process in researching, writing, editing, getting critiques was an invaluable experience in learning.  The winning was just an incredible blessing and surprise.

Way to go, Ashley!!!
