This is a non-elimination Spelling Bee, therefore, even if a student misspells a word, he or she will not be eliminated and the student in each grade level or grade grouping spelling the greatest number of words correctly will be declared the winner of that level.
All participants will receive coupon prizes and trophies will be awarded to the 1st place winners in each grade level. Ribbons will be awarded to 2nd and 3rd place winners as well.
Spelling Bee Rules
The rules will be reviewed before the spelling bee begins, but it may be helpful to read them in advance with your students. We have a great group of students and parents participating, neat prizes and coupons, and great snacks too!
Students will be grouped by grades and seated in alphabetical order. The callers will remind students of how to participate and may, if needed, practice with students before beginning. Callers will say a word; use the word in a sentence, then repeat the word. Students should say the word, spell the word, and repeat the word. It is OK if students forget this process in the younger grades. They will not be penalized. Recorders will tally the results of a spelled word, either as correct or incorrect.
This is a non-elimination Spelling Bee and students will not be eliminated for misspelling a word; however, callers and recorders can determine within their division whether students should be notified that they have spelled a word correctly. Recorders will simply tally the results and the student that spells the most words correctly will place first. Second and third place will follow accordingly. Callers will call out words in random order, not alphabetically. When a student begins spelling a word, they may self correct, but once they have completed spelling the word and repeated saying it, they may not go back and correct it. This may vary only in the case of the youngest grades (K and 1st). Once a word has been spelled or attempted by a student it will not be used again for another student. In the case of a tie or the word list has been exhausted, the caller will move to the next grade word list.
Callers: Please review the list you will be calling out. You may want to print them off at home before coming. We will have lists at the Bee. Some callers prefer to write or note sentences in advance but this is not necessary. In the case of homonyms, homophones, or homographs, you may say the variations, but use only one in a sentence. For example, on the second grade list “read” can be used in the present tense and past tense, as in “Today I read a book” or “Yesterday I read a book.” Our goal is to help the students get as many correct as possible, not trick them in any way. Please make sure the student knows what word s/he is to spell before they begin spelling, thus the goal of having them repeat the word first before beginning to spell; but they should not be penalized if they forget. Please try to vary the difficulty of the words, not always giving easier words to the same students but making it as fair as possible. One experienced caller suggested giving every third word. You may look at your lists and decide for yourselves.
Recorders: You will receive a sheet with the students listed in alphabetical order and two columns, labeled correct and incorrect. Sit with the callers and groups and listen carefully to the students spelling.
You will then simply tally the results. Recorders are not required to write missed words down, but some find it helpful to verify missed words with parents and students after the bee. Again, it is at the discretion of the caller and recorder together whether you will let a student know if s/he has misspelled a word. Continue until there is a clear delineation between first, second, and third places. In case of a tie, the callers will continue with the next grade list.
